Your Weakness Is Not Your Destiny

“Mpeople are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” (Hosea 4:6)

Life can be very challenging and difficult at times, none of us is immuned to trials in life. Often, when we face life dilemmas, we try to make sense of it in the best possible ways to console us. It is in one of these life difficult situations that I came across people making repeated comments about “Carry our cross”. In this past week alone, I have heard at least three people make this comment some how in their conversations with me. And I do understand that they are trying their best somehow to make sense of the painful situations they are in.

I’m sure many of us as well have witness people saying things like this in the past, “you know we all have a cross to carry in life”. “You know, everybody’s cross is different but you have to carry whatever God gives you to carry, because the Lord knows you can carry it” “The Lord wouldn’t give you this cross to carry for Him if He knew you couldn’t carry it”.

Many times we make statements like this and they sound very religious, but unfortunately they are not interpreted in the context of their true Biblical meaning. And The sad thing is that, many times Satan is able to deceive us and steal from us when we lack understanding of the Word of God. This is why the Lord says we are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Infact, He says “My people” referring to those belonging to the household of faith in Jesus Christ.

You see, the Word of God is the Truth. (John17:17). The Word is supernatural and supercedes the physical and every other law. (Isaiah 55:10-11). It has the power to set us free supernaturally from any situation, but having said that, though the Word has the power to accomplish what it says, but if you and I as individuals don’t know how to walk by faith and receive from God what He has already made available for us the devil will steal it from us!

That is why Jesus said : “The thief comes only in order to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance (to the full, till it overflows).” (John 10:10).

Satan loves it when we play religious stuff because, we allow him to put us in bondage and steal our blessings. In dealing with the comment I mentioned , yes indeed, the Bible talks about “carrying our cross” but not in that context. Here is the verse; Then Jesus said to the disciples, “If anyone wants to be a follower of mine, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.” (Matthew 16:24).

What Jesus was saying in this statement is different from the interpretation many have given it. You need to read the text before the statement and after, to get the full meaning of what Jesus was saying. Lets take a deeper look at this Bible passage:

23 Jesus turned on Peter and said, “Get away from me, you Satan! You are a dangerous trap to me. You are thinking merely from a human point of view, and not from God’s.”

24 Then Jesus said to the disciples, “If anyone wants to be a follower of mine, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.

25 For anyone who keeps his life for himself shall lose it; and anyone who loses his life for me shall find it again. (Matthew 16:23-24.

You see, in this context Jesus is not talking about carrying the cross of the ‘cursed life’ again because Jesus already did that for us. Look at this:

Christ purchased our freedom [redeeming us] from the curse (doom) of the Law [and its condemnation] by [Himself] becoming a curse for us, for it is written [in the Scriptures], Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree (is crucified); 14 To the end that through [their receiving] Christ Jesus, the blessing [promised] to Abraham might come upon the Gentiles, so that we through faith might [all] receive [the realization of] the promise of the [Holy] Spirit.” Galatians 3: 13-14.

Jesus came to set us free from every curse under the law of sin. That is, sickness, poverty, lack, distress, pain, anything and every thing that came through sin when Adam and Eve disobeyed God in Genesis chapter three.

Galatians chapter three tells us the ‘before and after version’. Which is, Jesus came to carry the CURSE for us so that we may receive the BLESSINGS God promised through Abraham, What promise? To restore us back from spiritual death(separation from God) to LIFE (a supernatural relationship with God). That is why Scripture says:

Therefore if any person is [ingrafted] in Christ (the Messiah) he is a new creation (a new creature altogether); the old [previous moral and spiritual condition] has passed away. Behold, the fresh and new has come!” (2 Corinthians 5:17).

The cross Jesus is talking about here is not carrying the cross of disease , sickness, poverty distress, pain , misery and the things under the curse. He already set us free from that! The cross Jesus is talking about is for crucifying the old life – “the cursed life”. The cross we are to carry everyday is for crucifying the cursed life so that it doesn’t interfer with the NEW LIFE we have inherited in Jesus Christ!

You can not put a new wine in old wine skin, it can not hold. That is why the Bible says we must put to death the old life:

So then, brethren, we are debtors, but not to the flesh [we are not obligated to our carnal nature], to live [a life ruled by the standards set up by the dictates] of the flesh.13 For if you live according to [the dictates of] the flesh, you will surely die. But if through the power of the [Holy] Spirit you are [habitually] putting to death (making extinct, deadening) the [evil] deeds prompted by the body, you shall [really and genuinely] live forever. (Romans 8:12-13).

Are we suppose to carry the cross? Yes! But, the cross we must now carry is to crucify our “old nature or the worldly life style”. When the cursed mindset or thinking shows up we are to nail it back on the cross in Jesus name, because that is where it belongs, not in, or on us, as followers of Jesus Christ.

When sickness, decease, poverty, fornication, adulatory and other sinful habits under the old nature want to gain entrance and corrupt our New Life in Christ we are to reprogram our thinking, renew our mind and act like Jesus will act in such situations. When the devil comes to steal our marriage, children, family  we send that evil back to the cross and stand against it by faith believing the word of God and confessing God’s Word over the situation. This is how we crucify the cursed life on the cross Jesus commands us to carry daily.

In Christ we have a new life. Jesus exchanged His life for you, on the cross, He took your old life, cursed with poverty, lack, sickness, distress, pain and your punishment for sin. (Isaiah 53) He traded places with you, and exchanged it with His own LIFE which is free of sin and the curse. He took your CURSED life and He gave you His BLESSED Life in exchange.

The Scriptures says “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16). Everlasting or Eternal life is the God-Kind LIFE. The very LIFE God has in heaven is an Everlasting LIFE that is overflowing with abundant love, peace, joy, righteousness and every good thing that is beyond human comprehension.

This is the life Jesus was talking about when He said “…..I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance (to the full, till it overflows).” (John 10:10).  This is the life Jesus has connected us back to – The God Kind LIFE.

When Adam and Eve sinned we got separated from that life (Gen.3) but when Jesus came He reconnected us back to the supernatural and abundant Life. The New Life is not a survival life, where we just manage to survive, barely having our needs met, living in fear and anxiety about tomorrow. The New Life is a thriving Life that begins on the inside and radiates out . It is a victorious Life because Jesus already won the victory for us!

Jesus didn’t come to give us religion, he came to set us free! Let us commit to taking time to study the word of God, and have understanding of what rightfully belongs to us so that the devil is not able to steal from us. Because it is only the TRUTH that we know that sets us free!(John 8:31-32).

In closing, I want us to be encouraged in the knowing that, no matter how difficult and impossible our present circumstances look, we can hold on to the Word of God by faith and rejoice by faith in the Lord because He is well able to deliver us and give us the breakthrough we need in Jesus name!

Little children, you are of God [you belong to Him] and have [already] defeated and overcome them [the agents of the antichrist], because He Who lives in you is greater (mightier) than he who is in the world.” (John 4:4).

Be encouraged, God bless you!
