Stepping Into Your Jordan

Then Joshua told the people, “Purify yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do great wonders among you.” (Joshua 3:5)

Today lets take a look at Joshua Chapter three. Israel has now come to a full cycle in the wilderness. God delayed their promised land because of their disobedience in honouring the Word of God above the ‘giants’ they saw in the land of their promise. (Numbers chapter 14). After spending 40 years in the wilderness of wandering, a new generation of  has now emerged with the exception of Joshua and Caleb who kept a good attitude after they went to spy the promised land. They have both been preserved by God through the wilderness years. Their strength was just as it was when they went to spy the land. (Joshua 14:11).

So Israel was now on the edge of River Jordan, about to enter their long awaited Land of Promise – Canaan. But first, they need to confront the obstacle in their way – a swollen river. River Jordan was swollen over 50 times it’s usual size because of it was the season of harvest. And on the other size of the river were the fortified cities they were to take over; The Canaanites, Hittites, Hivites, Perizzites,Girgashites Amorites and Jebusites. This was an impossibility! They had no means of tackling these in their own strength and abilities. This was a spiritual problem, they needed a supernatural intervention! They needed the presence of God to go before them!

What did Israel do? We can all learn two very important things among many from this;
・ First, they had to sanctify themselves. They were to examine their lives and separate themselves from defilements, because of a holy God in their midst. They were to turn from their sinful ways and habits; The works of the flesh (Gal 5:19-21). Often it’s sin that separates us from walking in God’s promises for our lives.
・ Second, they needed to follow God. They had to step into River Jordan! In order words Israel had to take a Step of faith! And when they did – God honoured their faith, God stopped the Jordan for them.  And they crossed over on dry ground! God honours it when we believe His Word above the lies of the devil.

To receive a promise from God, you need a miracle. You can not inherit spiritual promise in your own natural strength. The flesh cannot inherit the kingdom of God. (John 6:63). The flesh and the Spirit cannot walk together, they are opposites. (Galatians 5:17). God wants to get the glory not the flesh! We usually like every thing to be ready and look possible enough for us before stepping out.  But God calls us to walk by faith and not by sight. (Hebrews 11:1).
Beloved be encouraged today, If you feel helpless and powerless to cross your ‘River Jordan.’ God is able. The whole universe put together cannot try scratching the surface of God’s infinite power and abilities even if it tries. God’s power cannot be confronted by any. Jehovah specialises in doing the impossible. God wants you to take your eyes off yourself and your impossible circumstances and look to God for a miracle!

Prayer confession:Father you are a righteous and holy God, and I am an offspring of righteousness called to walk after the Spirit not the lust of the flesh. Help me to examine my life and turn from the works of the flesh and follow after you. Thank you Father that you have not give me the spirit of fear but the Spirit of power, love and sound mind. The Holy Spirit lives in me and I will not fear. I can do all things through Christ who gives me supernatural strength and abilities. My heart is fortified with the Word of God and I am more than a conqueror as I walk by faith and not by sight. In Jesus Name. Amen.

Reflection: "Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done." (Philippians 4:6).

  • Hi Shade! Wonderful point that I am not able, yet God is. I love the idea that the whole universe can’t do a thing next to him. Praise be to our God! He can do what we cannot. And that’s something to really remember.

    • Amen! God is too big to fail. May continue to fix our gaze on Him. Thank you Ceil! BLESS YOU 🙂

  • Takes divine assistance to seek Jesus instead of giving into flesh. Help us Jesus. vw
